2011-CMIA Workshop - Sacramento California

 Managers Discover Gold in Sacramento

Top notch programming complete with relevant industry topics, great networking opportunities and quality social activities is the best way to describe the 2011 CMIA Workshop held April 3 – 6 in Sacramento, CA. But don’t take our word for it! Here’s what some of your peers had to say:

“Team hosts are to be congratulated for putting on one of the best workshops I have ever attended, and I have attended over 25 workshops for large scale managers dating back to 1982. The Serrano team had a solid plan for the workshop and they executed that plan in a very professional manner. No detail was overlooked and they found just the right balance of tours, tire kicking and presentations.”

Jeff Evans, Consulting Manager, Lake Naomi Club, PA

“I recommend this event to all large scale managers for the hands on value that is the hallmark of the CMIA workshop.”
Kit Kelly, Director of Property Management, Resort at Squaw Creek, CA

“Thank you hosts and CMIA Board for staying true to the goal of a “hands on, kick the tires” workshops. I get my best ideas for implementation at home by getting into the details at the host communities.”
Kevin Chudy, Executive Director, Woodbridge Village Association, CA

“There is gold in them there hills and we all left this workshop with several nuggets!”
Bill Peck, General Manager, Sunriver Owners Association, OR

2011 Workshop Highlights

Sunday

Day one started with managers and spouses being greeted at the Sacramento Airport by a CMIA shuttle van driven by Serrano El Dorado Owners’ Association staff. Golfers gathered for a pre-workshop round at The Yolo Flyers Club in Woodland. Early arrivers relaxed in the hospitality suite at the posh Le Rivage Hotel where Serrano staff passed out registration materials and gifts, including leather duffel bags, tote bags loaded with a portfolio binder of all they would see and enjoy and leather name badge/passport holders.

The attendees renewed old friendships and kindled new friendships at our Opening Reception at Scott’s Seafood, adjacent to our host hotel. The evening ended with s’mores (Serrano style) at outdoor fire pits along the Sacramento River, and socializing in the hospitality suite.

Monday

After consuming a hearty breakfast, managers loaded the bus for tours of Natomas Park (Greg Vorster), Riverlake  (Kevin Hubred) and Trilogy at Rio Vista (Ed Vitrano). The community tours included demonstrations of what makes each of these associations unique. Along the way, we learned interesting facts about the region by Ed Vitrano and our hired tour guide, ate steak sandwiches at the historic Fosters Bighorn restaurant in Rio Vista and enjoyed a wine reception at Dutra Dredging Museum followed by wine tasting while dining at the lavish Grand Island Mansion. There was little down time but ample opportunities to network, eat and drink, and discover that gold nugget of information which makes these workshops so special.

Tuesday

Tuesday started with a tour of Rancho Murieta (Nick Arther) followed by lunch at Serrano Country Club and a tour of the Serrano El Dorado community (John Bowman). The day ending with Casino night on the historic Delta King, a paddlewheel riverboat moored on the Sacramento River in Old Town Sacramento.  Attendees participated in gaming for fun and prizes, music and plenty to eat and drink. Afterward, diehards gathered for a nightcap and more networking in our hospitality suite before calling it a day

Wednesday

Our workshop closed with a buffet breakfast together at Scott’s Seafood. CMIA President Mike Cibio, presided over our CMIA annual meeting. John Bowman was our moderator for a first-rate panel presentation on dealing with vacant homes and foreclosures which included top industry experts in banking, collections, asset protection and association law. Ed Vitrano capped off the workshop by leading a round table Q&A on what we saw and learned. But before heading home, several managers participated in post-workshop golf at Folsom’s Empire Ranch.

Spouse Programming

“This was the 30th Spouse Program I’ve attended over the years and your Sacramento workshop was absolutely the best spouse program of them all.”
Carol Stewart, Spouse

Spouses were treated to a day with local celebrity and wine educator Pooch Pucilowski who made tasting not only fun but educational as they visited behind the scenes with three local wineries and noshed with a winemaker before meeting up with managers at the Dutra Dredging Museum for  more wine tasting followed by dinner at the Grand Island Mansion.

On day two, spouses visited the world renowned Crocker Art Museum and lunched at the elegant Biba’s where they met and posed for a picture with award winning chef, restaurateur and cookbook author Biba Caggiano.

Cheers!

The 2011 planning committee of John Bowman and the Serrano staff are truly thrilled they had this opportunity to showoff Sacramento and the large scale communities that make this a spectacular place to live. They’ll be napping for the next few months as they recuperate from all of their hard work! Thank you to all of the host managers and their staffs, key Serrano vendors that stepped up to make this workshop possible, the CMIA Board for selecting Sacramento as the 2011 workshop venue and to each of the managers who took their time to attend!
